The department carries forward a rich legacy
as its first departmental chair was the renowned Physiologist Padma
Vibhushan Dr. Autar Singh Paintal
who also happened to be the first Principal of the institution. He was
the first Indian Physiologist to become a Fellow of the Royal Society,
London, was former Director General of the Indian Council of Medical
Research and founded the Society of Scientific Values.
In 1976, Dr K
N Sharma joined the UCMS, as Professor of Physiology. He was a great
teacher and researcher, a competent administrator, had a strong work
ethic and was actively involved in medical education (need based
teaching-learning and assessment strategies), development of innovative
teaching methods, and medical curriculum development in India &
abroad. Soon, he became Principal of UCMS and shaped the great
institute to its present glory

Dr. Neelam Vaney
currently heads the department.
The
department is actively engaged in the basic and applied research in the
fields of cardiovascular, respiratory, neurophysiology, clinical electrophysiology including evoked
potential, yoga research, academic medicine, clinical medical ethics
and health humanities. The department assists in the teaching of health
professions education for MBBS, BSc Nursing, and BSc Physiotherapy, BSc
Medical Technology, BSc Radiography and open classes.
