Dr Ashok PIC.JPGUCMS, University of Delhi, has been an “academic gateway”, for myself, right since my joining here as a lecturer (Anaesth.) on 3rd Aug 1987 & subsequently getting appointed as “Head of Dept.” on 28th Feb, 2017. So, in this academic journey inclusive of 22 years as Professor, I have been gifted with infinite suttle energy by God almighty, for immensely serving the patients (In PAC, Emergency OTs, Elective OTs, ICU, COVID-ICU and Chronic pain pts., Cancer pain pts. in Pain Clinic) & alleviating their pain and suffering.

My patients have provided me the clinical material for 169 publications in international and national journals, in addition to 41 chapters in various books. Currently, I am also Nodal Officer & overall Incharge of 500 bedded ICU-COVID Care facility at Ramleela ground opposite GTB Hospital. During this COVID-19 pandemic, our Dept. of Anaesthesia has managed multiple COVID ICUs & established a new MGPS oxygen plant with oxygen storage tank of 113KL, along with 4 PSA devices. For us the motto has been that “One right move can bring a Quantum leap in the management of all types of patients.”

In addition to my WHO fellowship on “Pain” at Churchill Hospital, Oxford & St. Guy’s Hospital, London, in 1997, God has been extremely kind enough to bestow upon me various awards like IASP, USA award for Excellence in pain research and management in developing countries, in 2020, “State Award” by Govt. of Delhi in 2015, FICA (Fellow of India College of Anaesthesiologist) in 2013 & FAMS (Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences) in 2003.

We have also taken initiatives & organized camps on “Pain education for Nurses” all across the nation as a part of IASP, USA award for promoting Pain education clinical, I have also made sincere efforts in establishing “Pain as 5th vital sign” in day to day practice.

As a doctor, I have not mastered the art of disassociating myself from patient care and always believed that “touch” has healing properties on the patients. My constant endeavor has been to “Transform myself from being a piece of creation to being a creator”, and so this dept. of Anesthesiology, Critical care, and Pain Medicine, has proved to be a “Centre of excellence” on a national & international level.
