My foremost areas of interests
in Clinical nutrition center on the
therapeutic nutritional management of nutritional conditions and
changes in patients linked to their physiological conditions and chronic
diseases. My earlier research work was on celiac disease where
nutritional management through a gluten-free diet is the corner-stone
of the treatment in such patients. I worked to find the minimum dose
(trace amounts) of
gluten, that is, a threshold value or the minimum safe limit of
consumption, by exploring the effects on nutritional, clinical,
serological, biochemical and histological parameters of pediatric patients with celiac disease. Presently,
I am carrying out research work in diabetes and nutrition - related
areas, so as to generate practical implications on the health of the patients
with diabetes. For instance, there is a general belief that rice
aggravates diabetes, I explored the glycemic
responses of North Indian mixed meal combinations having wheat or rice
(cereals) as staple to achieve a glycemic
response of mixed diets that do not lead to overall post-prandial hyperglycemia. Similarly, I have conducted studies
on - protein intake in Type-2 diabetes patients and its relation to
their blood glucose levels; on assessment of artificial sweeteners
related knowledge, attitude and practice in diabetic patients; and on factors
affecting dietary compliance in patients with Type-2 diabetes. From my present work, I am
re-exploring the concept of glycemic index,
with respect to available carbohydrates in different foods and how this
concept can be of practical usage in dietary management of patients
with diabetes.
