Obtained MBBS (1981) and MD (Community Medicine 1985) from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow. Was recipient of Gold Medals in Anatomy and Physiology, Dr C Mani Gold Medal for Best Intern and University Gold Medal for Best Postgraduate.

 

Professor and Head, Dept of Community Medicine, University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi since 2014. Also headed the department at Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi and BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Nepal.

 

Was awarded WHO Fellowship at UCLA and UC Berkeley in 1989; Australian Leadership Award at University of Melbourne in 2008; Dhanwantari Oration in 2014; Dr AL Saha Memorial Oration in 2008; and ICMR-NIIR Foundation Day Oration in 2022. A Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences (2005), Indian Public Health Association (1995) and Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine (2006). Been a part of WHO-SEAR team for evaluation of National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAG) in the region. Been the Technical Expert to WHO on Evaluation of WHO Collaborating Centres in SEAR, Community-based Services, and Prevention and Control of Injury and Violence. Has co-chaired the Committee for Revision of National AEFI Guidelines. A Member of: National AEFI Committee and Causality Assessment Committee for AEFI related to COVID-19 Vaccines; India Expert Advisory Groups on Polio and Measles-Rubella; Central Coordinating Team of International Clinical Epidemiology Network; and Board of Studies, School of Medicine, GGS Indraprastha University. Also been: Board Member, School of Health Sciences, IGNOU; Member, Institutional Ethics Committee of Public Health Foundation of India; and Member of several of Indian Council of Medical Research’s Apex Committees and Expert Groups.

 

Presently working as the Chief Editor, Indian Journal of Public Health. Have also worked as the Editor, Indian Journal of Community Medicine. On the advisory and editorial boards of several biomedical journals. Completed 14 multicenter transnational projects, and published 147 papers in peer reviewed journals and books.
