Diagnostic and, therapeutic facilities available in the
department include intensive coronary care unit, medical intensive care
unit, cardio-respiratory laboratory with treadmill; colour Doppler
echocardiography, Holter monitoring,
pulmonary function tests, haemo- and
peritoneal dialysis, bronchoscopy, gastrointestinal endoscopy, and
endocrine and metabolic laboratory. Preventive cardiology clinic,
nephrology clinic, hypertension clinic, endocrine-diabetic clinic,
chest and TB clinic provide special services in the above areas.
Major thrust areas for research are characterization of
coronary risk factors, indigenous drugs in the management of CAD,
diabetes mellitus related macrovascular and microvascular disease,
dyslipidaemia in diabetes, anaemia and CAD in chronic renal failure,
oxidative stress in stroke, and pedigree profile as research tool in
young coronary artery disease, and tobacco-related cardiovascular
disorders, cardiovascular health implications of smokeless tobacco
products, and issues related to tobacco cessation.
The department developed pedigree profile and
sub-clinical atherosclerosis assessment model in young coronary artery
disease and started continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis for
treatment of patients with end-stage renal failure. In the endocrine
division, a separate endocrinology clinic and twice-weekly diabetes
clinics have been started. The endocrine & metabolic lab. has also grown in capacity and infrastructure with
procurement of various equipments. Diabetes,
Endocrine & Metabolic ward has started to further strengthen the
endocrine services. Department has now taken up the responsibility of
running Antirectroviral Therapy Clinic since
Feb 2009. The Department is also running Senior Citizens Clinic, Young
CAD Clinic and lately the Cardiomyopathy and Tobacco Cessation Clinic.
New facilities like CRRT in Dialysis Unit and CIMT assessment in
CCU/Preventive Cardiology have been started. A 5-bedded Intermediate
Coronary Care Unit proides step-down care.
Department provides specialized services to patients
suffering from cardiac aliments, endocrine and metabolic disorders
particularly diabetes, kidney diseases, pulmonary problems and
intensive medical care to critically ill patients. The department has
developed unique facilities in the area of preventive cardiology, diabetology, CAPD and hemodialysis.
In the previous years, the department organized 15th Annual
Conference of Indian Society of Hypertension (ISHCON-2005) and
international CME on hypertension, atherosclerosis and coronary artery
disease (ICHAC-2005) in collaboration with preventive cardiology group
of UCMS. This important meet was attended by Regional Director, South
East Asia Region (SEAR) of WHO, and participants from Nepal, UK, USA
and South Korea. The department has started a popular lecture series on
common health problems for the benefit of common people. The lectures
are delivered in vernacular language..
