After a bright studentship and
passing as medical undergraduate of prestigious University of Delhi,
(1982), and postgraduate from an institute of imminence i.e. AIIMS,
N-Delhi (1986), Dr. Verma
started his professional career as Specialist, Central Health Services
(1987), and then as lecturer UCMS (1988). Where he rose to the level of
Professor (2000) and then re-designated as Director Professor (2008).
He established the first ever Dept. of Forensic Medicine at Safdarjung Hospital and contributed significantly
in making the mortuaries functional both at SJH and GTBH within a very
short span of his joining. He has the honor
and privilege of conducting first ever medico-legal postmortems
at both the above institutions.
Besides being a widely acknowledged
expert in his field, he possesses excellent command in teaching and
research as evidenced by publication of more than 90 research papers in
various scientific journals of repute and more than 20 write ups in
books/ monographs/ proceedings. Dr.Verma
guided 20 MD students and has been examiner to about 30
Universities/Institutions in India. He has been the Editor- in-chief of
a reputed UGC approved journal in his specialty from 2002 to 2015 and
functioning as member editorial board in several scientific journals.
As a testimony of his work in his specialty, Dr.Verma
has conducted/ supervised more than 12,000 medico-legal autopsies and
appeared more than 3,000 times as expert witness in different courts of
the country during his service span of about 37 years at AIIMS, SJH and
UCMS. Though he has been involved in investigation of many high profile
cases, his main contribution is in helping the under-privileged section
of society to get justice. His contribution in solving Monkey Man
Mystery in the year 2001 in Delhi NCR is noteworthy; this work has been
telecasted on National Geographic channel also. Further, his research
work has been cited not only in Indian but also in foreign books.
In recognition of his exemplary
contribution, Dr.Verma has been awarded
with WHO In Country Fellowship as well as Fellowship of Indian Academy
of Forensic Medicine (He being the youngest
recipient and first one from State of Delhi for this fellowship) and
Fellowship of Indian Congress of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology. He
also has many awards to his credit as well like the Life time
Achievement Award by ICFMT, Dr. Dogra Award,
IMA Excellence Award and UCMS Alumni Award. Dr.Verma
has shown his great administrative capabilities as Head of Department,
Chairman, CCS, University of Delhi, organizing
various scientific meetings, President, UCMS Alumni and chairman/member
in a large number of college/hospital and state level committees/
boards. He also has performed as PIO under RTI Act of the College and
as guest/ visiting faculty/Resource person/ Expert to numerous
institution of repute like NICFS, NIHFW, National Police Academy, Delhi
Judicial Academy, CBI Academy, DMC, PDTS, HIPA, NHRC, NFSU, Police
Training College, M.P. etc. and delivered more than 300 guest/ invited
lectures and Dr. Jagdish
Chandra Oration. Dr.Verma has appeared
numerous times in media through writing in newspapers, national/
international television talks and even in a documentary featured by
National Geographic (US) on the issues of public importance. He has
also attended/presented papers in more than 100 scientific meetings
both nationally and internationally as delegate/ Resource person/
Chairman of scientific sessions.
